Artificial intelligence to be introduced in Tajikistan’s prisons

The Government of Tajikistan has approved an action plan to implement the Strategy for Reforming the Criminal Penalties Enforcement System through 2030. The plan covers 2026–2030, includes 62 measures across nine areas, and designates the Ministry of Justice as the main coordinating body. The plan was approved by a government resolution dated June 26, 2026. The new document aims to bring Tajikistan’s criminal penalties enforcement system closer to modern standards by strengthening security and oversight while improving detention conditions and preparing convicted persons for reintegration into society. These two priorities — enhanced technological control and a more human-centered approach — are among the main features of the plan. Artificial intelligence enters prisons One of the plan’s notable innovations is the digitalization of oversight in correctional facilities.

According to the document, Tajikistan will first study the experience of developed countries in using artificial intelligence to monitor convicted persons. The technology will then be introduced on a pilot basis at Correctional Facility No. 3/2 in Vahdat Township. Facial recognition devices (Face ID), electronic security systems, motion sensors and video surveillance systems will also be installed at several other correctional facilities. The measures are intended to strengthen security, prevent incidents and enable continuous monitoring of the movement of convicted persons using modern technologies.
